Pisces Iscariot
2012 reissue
bonus disc

reviewed from cd

as per NAD and DUAL audiophile amps and Magnat 5 way and DUAL 4 way speakers.

1. By June
– new title? Funny detail
– not too much happening in the new mix, levelled upped a bit
– same version as known

2. My Dahlia
– beefier in the mix than on LID LP but all in a not that much different
– some different stereo panning
– bass is more pronounced in the mix
– more spatial mix, even MORE spatial with the chiming brittle lead guitar part

3. Jesus Loves His Babies
– rocking version, sounds live in the studio with little to no overdubs
– this is not the MP-one
– very nice Gish-y sound to the drums and the band
– phone machine message is REALLY LOUD now!
– I’d say this is another live take

4. Cinnamon Girl
– the one we know
– hiss removed, levels upped
– more clarity in the high (even more!)
– a nice “hey” audible now!

5. Glynis
– starts out pretty much like the original version
– second (Iha’s) guitar slightly higher in the mix
– brush-drums slightly louder
– a nice “Yeah” from BC somewhere
– then it gets new with the other second guitar part by Iha
– that’s totally new
– check the acoustic guitars in the background and their clarity!
– sitar-solo? Never heard that one like now.
– wah-wah solo is fucked up and the band kicks in sooner I think
– Iha on one channel very loud with his second part
– stellar vocal performance from BC which is ABSENT from the original
– laughs et cetera and screams…. also absent from the original

6. Crawl
– long time known to exist, I’ve wondered about the song for ages as I’ve seen the title on a demo tape
– some kind of demo for or sister of “Suffer”-meets-”Crush”
– the riff is there, the melody is there, the song is not
– very nice to hear it now, but there’s a reason this and the “Blue” from the same session were never released
– this pretty much is a nice little dittle/doodle but even a C-side status would be too much honour for this attempt for a song
– pretty in a way, but terrible in performance

7. Cinder Open
– so this is the untitled song from the tape!
– this tape: http://www.spfc.org/songs-releases/boot … oot_id=165
– in a way a typical TSP “non-song” but this one was some very nice notes towards the progress the band has made in recent years which is pretty funny…
– QUESTION MARK? – why did BC include exactly this 1989-demo in the cassette setlist???

8. Blissed
– very nice song
– reminds me of the TT-single b-sides, a lot even!
– though this is much earlier…
– finally a clear version of this song I’ve known the title of for ages, but had never heard!
– not for an album, but very much OK
– nice stringbending by Iha by the way! :)

9. Slunk (live)
– you know what you get
– hit like a “motherfucker” in the face

10. Jackie Blue
– intro is totally different to the original
– intonation differs, it is another tone (lower for 1 step I guess?!)
– this must be another take than the one we all are familiar with…?!
– just checked with the other Jackie Blue-versions I have; this is not that one for sure.
– almost seems like BC thought to have found the master for the Jackie Blue we know and thought it to be ok, but I know of at least one cassette with five versions of Jackie Blue in ‘private hands’, so…

11. Venus in Furs (live)
– very nice remix and remastering done here!
– removed all hiss (or BC still owns a pristine tape)
– too bad we cannot hear the DJ’s amazing comments :)
– very clear and spatial recording with nicely chiming guitars
– Iha in stellar form!

12. Translucent
– same as on MP only better quality
– don’t try to do a Bob Dylan-thingy with the harmonica…
– levels are upped, bass more upfront and drums too

13. French Move Theme
– first off: WHY?
– same version as we already know

14. Purr Snickety
– the version on the Cherub Rock 7” single is in full mono
– this one still is, thus same one
– no further remastering or anything I guess
– sound though like a Tonight, Tonight b-side…

15. There It Goes (demo)
– starts almost as (minimal) techno
– levels are WAY TOO HIGH up!!!! in this new mix; it’s new wave-apres-la-lettre…!!! yeah, thus”: one could do this mix, BUT: keep it ‘wave’, please
– in way: much too hard (sounding) for the time
– poor JC… he’s the metronome and some instants he can show his skill

16. Vanilla
– from this session, no doubt: http://www.spfc.org/band/studio.html?session_id=6
– nicely done as per remastering

17. Why Am I So Tired (Live in studio demo)
– totally same as per the end of “Earphoria”

demo tape

1.
Nice to make a red tape and a different cover.
People owning the original thus cannot be duped.

2.
Poor quality sleeve and cassette.

3.
Why no normal cassette sleeve/holder?

4.
The band has lost their master copies of these recordings.
This is so much more ‘hissy’ and ‘noisy’ than my own original copy.

5.
Still a nich addition to the set!

6.
Very nice that some tracks were remixed again!

7.
Very glad the owners of the originals weren’t “fucked” with a replica, but got the tape yet again and if you want the real thing, you can get the real thing. Which is not this knock-off.

3. Jesus Loves His Babies

– I haven’t compared them side by side yet, but I think it’s the same take, they just messed with the opening drums to make a fluid intro.

6. Crawl
Agreed. Not a good song.

11. Venus in Furs (live)
Indeed: too bad we cannot hear the DJ’s amazing comments :)

13. French Move Theme
– first off: WHY?

too fit a CD with as many songs as possible?

hello?!

Did a quick side-by-side compare… it’s (almost) the same track, only with a different mix. Sounds like BC fooled us

All the guitar parts are there already in the 1993 Glynis, but buried deep, very deep in the mix, because the bass part is mixed up front. This was altered in the 2012 Glynis; bass in the back, vocals and guitar up front.

The ‘spacey effect’ at ~1:35 got lost in the 2012 Glynis, that’s why we hear an additional BC ‘yeah’.

Only at the end of the track (at ~3:50) the vocals are clearly different.

The liner notes in the deluxe box booklet tell us that it was recorded at Sadlands, Winter 1992. Billy Corgan wrote 1990 on Mashed Potatoes. Billy is not always that good with dating his legacy (remember his slip of the tongue with the song Bleed at the Oceania cruise a little while back), so yeah… Another BC typo found on Mashed Potatoes…

But is it the Mashed Potatoes version, it is, isn’t it? The liner notes of the Pisces Iscariot deluxe reissue state that it was recorded at River North, Chicago in 1988. Or is/was that Billy’s father home studio?

And SPFC adds them all together for 1988:

I think 1990 is correct. Sadlands as a name for his home recording studio wasn’t used till around 93/94 I think, when he moved from one apartment to the other. Also: this song sounds like a demo around the Gish time, not after the release of Gish. 1990 seems to be accurate is my estimation.

yes, I think (but Jeroen can confirm with a back2back comparison) this is the one on MP.
but remixed of course, which would imply multitrack recording, which I find stunning at that stage of their carreer…
