Additional Information

Public material of the Jimmy Chamberlin OD case in 1996. Found on rockonthenet.com:

1997 October

The Smashing Pumpkins decided to settle with the family of Jonathan Melvoin. The lawsuit claimed that the other band members failed to make certain Melvoin stayed off drugs and therefore contributed to his death. Chamberlain also pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct which allowed him to avoid jail time if he completed a drug rehabilitation program. D’arcy described the incident as “…was like a slap in the face. A big reality check. We had this incredible realization that we shouldn’t be taking things for granted.” She further stated that Chamberlain’s drug use “…went on in secret behind our backs. We had already fired Jonathan. He came back crying, and begged for a second chance to prove himself. As far as we knew, he was clean. We liked him a lot, he was a very sweet guy, and we hired him back…We were very angry. We deserved a chance to try and felt we shouldn’t be punished for his stupidity.”
