Additional Information

This cassette, made by Billy Corgan in January 1991, a few months before the actual release of Gish, is aka “Gish Rough Mix” or “Gish Off The Console” in the Smashing Pumpkins fan community. This tape contains a so-called off the console rough mix of the whole album, i.e. a non-mastered mix of Gish, although the difference in mixing is so slight it’s pretty difficult to point out the differences. Billy Corgan gave this tape to Mike Potential of Limited Potential in January 1991. Note: Billy Corgan started recording on side B, and didn’t mention I’m Going Crazy, though it is on the tape.

On the day this tape was known to the world in October 2000, the buyer told this about it:

“I just received this tape today! Yay! I bought it from Mike Potential.

That writing up on the top left is Jerome Brown from Catherine’s handwriting, and those are the song titles that were originally the demos on this tape. This is the Catherine demo that Billy was supposed to give Mike, but he taped over the entire Catherine part with his “Gish” tracks. Obviously, you can see Billy wrote the tracklisting for Gish.

Mike Potential received this tape about 2 months before Gish was actually released. He estimated around late ’90 or really early ’91. These tracks were taken from an off-the-console mix at Smart Studios. I’ve listened to the tape quickly and it sounds pretty good. Since they are “rough mixes” the drums are quiet, the bass is lower, one guitar is very loud, another guitar is quiet, the vocal is quite loud, and the over all sound doesn’t have much bass in it.

I have noted a few differences. The biggest thing I found so far is the alternate ending for Rhino! The feedback part at the end fades in a out and there is about an extra bar of music. I also noted that I Am One and Snail sound different because of the mixes. I imagine there are a bunch more differences, but I don’t have time to listen to everything all the way through.
